Experience an evening of music, culture, and storytelling with Naomi Wenitong and Joel “Weno” Wenitong. This brother-sister duo have had a profound impact on hip-hop music in Australia. They continue to make change in their communities by empowering First Nations youth.

Moderated by Shannon Williams (aka Brothablack)

Naomi, a gifted vocalist and songwriter, rose to fame as one half of pop-R&B duo Shakaya. The duo had hits including “Stop Calling Me”, and toured with music heavyweights like Destiny’s Child and Usher. Joel is a skilled rapper and producer who was a founding member of hip-hop act Local Knowledge. Naomi, Joel and Jacob Turier, later formed the group The Last Kinection. Their music merges hip hop with storytelling, addressing social issues, cultural identity, and community.

Naomi and Joel use their art to uplift and empower First Nations voices. Their impact in the community goes beyond just music. Naomi is the founder of the Naytive Mentorship a program that empowers young people interested in entering the music industry. Joel started his career as a high school teacher and is now a General Practitioner (GP Doctor). He is particularly passionate about the health and wellbeing of First Nations youth.
