Euphoric synth-pop heroes take over the Concert Hall for a special night of live catharsis

Baltimore post-wave four-piece Future Islands will make their blistering Sydney Opera House debut in the Concert Hall on Sunday 19 February, with one unforgettable night of soaring songs, apocalyptic emotions and rapturous dancing.

Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall, said: “For their long-awaited return to Australia after six years, Future Island’s urgent blend of new wave and post-punk will be writ breathtakingly large on the grand Concert Hall stage for the first time ever. Their live performances are renowned as visceral, transformative experiences, with magnetic frontman Samuel T. Herring leaping between heartache and fist-pumping ecstasy in the blink of an eye. Don’t miss one of the world’s most in-demand live acts bringing all the melodrama they’re revered for.”

Future Islands skyrocketed from cult favourites to international phenomenon in 2014 with their breakthrough smash hit ‘Seasons (Waiting On You)’ – proclaimed by Pitchfork as one of the greatest songs of the decade, and captured in their now-iconic television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman.

The Opera House debut of the indie icons – founding trio William CashionSamuel T. HerringGerrit Welmers, and recently joined drummer Mike Lowry – will feature the sweeping melodies, lyrical daring and arena-ready synth-pop honed across acclaimed albums like 2017’s The Far Field and their latest 2020 release As Long As You Are, alongside life-affirming gems from their 16-year career.
