Jordi Savall with Hespèrion XXI

Grammy-nominated early music virtuoso returns to the renewed Concert Hall

Revered Spanish conductor, composer, and viola da gamba master Jordi Savall will be joined by early music ensemble Hespèrion XXI to perform vibrant music from the Renaissance and Baroque eras in the Opera House’s acoustically renewed Concert Hall on 28 February 2023.

For over fifty years, Savall has remained one of the most versatile musicians of his generation. Since forming his iconic ensemble Hespèrion XXI in the early 1970s, the Grammy-nominated, multi-million record selling musician has built an acclaimed career exploring the moments where global musical traditions intersect. He has revived once-forgotten works from the Middle Ages to the Baroque era, and broken down barriers between Western classical music and its counterparts across the world.

Sydney Opera House Classical Music Producer, Casey Green said: “Jordi Savall is early classical music royalty. His deep understanding of this repertoire will completely transport us through the Golden Age of European consort music in this rich program of works by Bach, Purcell and more. In 2018, Jordi Savall and Hespèrion XXI performed to a sold-out Concert Hall. In 2023, their performance in this glorious new acoustic will be next-level. I can’t wait!”

Savall’s live performances, with his gifted instrumentalists in Hespèrion XXI, are renowned for their wildly imaginative fusion of sounds, drawing inspiration from diverse cultures to transport the past to the present.

Savall has released more than 230 recordings, covering the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and classical music repertories with a focus on Hispanic and Mediterranean musical heritage. He is a recipient of the Midem Classical Award, the International Classical Music Award and a Grammy Award.
