Grammy-nominated Kamasi Washington will perform in the renewed Concert Hall in December 2022
Sydney – Monday 27 June, 2022. The Sydney Opera House today announced that Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Kamasi Washington will return to the Opera House on 4 December, bringing his fearless mix of jazz, hip-hop, classical and R&B to an Australian exclusive performance in the renewed Concert Hall. After stunning audiences in sold-out Opera House appearances in 2018 and 2019, the Los-Angeles born jazz visionary will perform in the newly transformed Concert Hall when the venue reopens in mid-2022 after more than two years of extensive upgrades.
“The mighty Kamasi Washington blew the roof off the Sydney Opera House on both previous sold-out visits, so after a long absence, we could not be more proud to welcome him into our newly refurbished Concert Hall to put it through its sonic paces with his electrifying take on jazz in 2022. Kamasi Washington makes his indelible mark in the Opera House Concert Hall this summer – don’t miss the modern master in the room he was always meant to play,” says Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall.
In February 2022, Washington released to critical acclaim a brand new single titled “The Garden Path” with a world premiere performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. In 2020, Washington scored Becoming – Netflix's documentary profiling former First Lady Michelle Obama – and was nominated for Grammy and Emmy awards for his contributions.
His three bodies of work to date – his solo debut The Epic, a three-hour, three-disc opus that exploded the boundaries between jazz, soul, funk and hip-hop; Harmony of Difference, an EP originally commissioned for the 2017 Whitney Biennial; and 2018 double album Heaven and Earth, are among the most acclaimed of the past decade. Washington has released two films: As Told To G/D Thyself, a short companion to Heaven and Earth, which debuted at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival to widespread acclaim; and the concert film Kamasi Washington Live at The Apollo Theater. Washington has toured the world, collaborating and sharing stages with Kendrick Lamar, Florence + the Machine, Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill, Flying Lotus, Chaka Khan, St Vincent and more.
