Opera House plates up new fish and chip pop-up as part of 50th anniversary celebrations

Pop-up fish and chip eatery to take over the picturesque northern broadwalk in January

Sydney – Wednesday 28 December, 2022. The Opera House has fish and chips on the menu this summer with the opening of The Harbour, a pop-up eatery on the Opera House’s northern broadwalk serving sustainably-sourced fresh seafood, crisp-fried fish, golden crunchy chips, takeaway classics like potato scallops, and one of the best views in Sydney.

Opening on Wednesday 4 January for four weeks only, the Opera House is transporting visitors back to the retro 80s as it recreates the original seafood restaurant that operated in the same location from the late 80s to the early 90s. The new pop-up will pay homage to the original eatery with checkered tablecloths, picnic tables and historical projections of the original restaurant.

While enjoying the harbour views, visitors can tuck into seafood a-plenty with a menu by Executive Chef Lee Thompson featuring fish burgers, seafood platters and grilled prawns. A picnic-ready takeaway menu is perfect for harbourside alfresco dining or in the neighbouring gardens.

“The Opera House precinct is a buzzing location over summer and we’re excited to introduce a new pop-up experience as part of our 50th anniversary program. The Harbour is a vibrant new eatery that brings together classic fish and chip fare with the striking harbour views of its northern waterfront location. Along with our summer performances and renowned harbourside dining venues, Portside, Opera Bar, House Canteen and Bennelong, the Opera House is a must-visit summer destination for locals, visitors, theatre-goers and families," said Sydney Opera House Chief Customer Officer, Jade McKellar.

“We are very excited to be working with the Sydney Opera House to bring classic nostalgia to the precinct. The space has been created for both the young and the young at heart, to celebrate the history of what the space once was and give visitors the opportunity to create new memories with loved ones that will last the test of time,” said Trippas White Group General Manager, David Madden.

“It's wonderful that the Opera House is kicking off the new year with the opening of The Harbour restaurant – a brand new pop-up venue that offers a unique summer destination for locals and visitors alike. With a range of world-class performances and experiences on this summer, I hope as many people as possible are able to visit the Opera House and enjoy the very best of what our city has to offer,” said Minister for the Arts Ben Franklin MLC.

The pop-up will run for four weeks from 4 January – 3 February, operating Tuesday to Saturday from midday to 8pm. A dine-in and takeaway menu will be designed by Executive Chef Lee Thompson from Trippas White Group, a leading hospitality group that operates venues including Reign at QVB, Bar 83 at Sydney Tower and Botanic House by Luke Nguyen.
