COVID-19 health update as of 28 August 2022:

Your guide to a safe and comfortable experience at the Opera House

The health, safety and wellbeing of everyone at the Opera House is our top priority. We have a number of COVID safe measures in place to help keep our community safe:

  • Face masks are strongly recommended for all patrons while inside our theatres and foyers, including during the performance. Please bring your own mask;
  • Well maintained and effective air conditioning systems that maximise ventilation with fresh air;  
  • Regular cleaning of high-traffic and high-touch areas with hospital-grade disinfectant;
  • Hand sanitiser stations with Dettol Aloe Vera Gel are available in paths of travel, frequently accessed areas and near bathroom facilities; and
  • COVID-19 safety training for all operational, frontline and contract staff.

Please don’t visit if you feel unwell, are displaying any of the COVID-19 symptoms as identified by NSW Health; are required to self-isolate or quarantine. Our General Terms and Conditions for Tickets and Attendance at Events are available here.

Get together, but keep apart. Practise physical distancing (1.5 metres whenever possible), follow the separate entry and exit points, screening and bag-check procedures, and physically distance in all queues.

Practise good hygiene, by washing your hands regularly with soap, using hand sanitiser, covering sneezes and coughs, and disposing of tissues promptly. Dettol hand washing tips are on display in all our bathrooms.

Pay with card. Contactless payment methods are strongly encouraged, so please bring a credit or debit card for onsite purchases. Our restaurants have order-at-table options and we encourage you to remain seated to help with physical distancing.

Visiting the Opera House when you are unwell puts yourself and others at risk. Attending while under quarantine or isolation orders is prohibited, and if you appear to have COVID-19 symptoms we may need to deny you entry or ask you to leave to minimise the risk to others. Please also consider your own safety and wellbeing and whether attending is the right thing for you. By visiting the Opera House at this time, you voluntarily assume the risks posed by COVID-19.

Are you a COVID Safe business?

Yes. The Opera House is registered as a COVID Safe business with the NSW Government.

What safety and hygiene measures are in place? 

Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of everyone on site, and we are closely following NSW Health guidelines and advice. Our COVID-19 health and safety information is available on this page.

Is mask wearing compulsory?

Face masks are strongly recommended for all patrons while inside our theatres and foyers, including during the performance. Please bring your own mask.

Are there restrictions on the number of people allowed in each theatre? 

Our venues are operating at 100% capacity. This includes all shows in the Concert Hall, Joan Sutherland Theatre, Studio, Playhouse, Drama Theatre and Utzon Room. Please note that you will be seated directly alongside other ticketholders. 

Will bathrooms and other shared spaces be cleaned regularly?

Shared facilities such as bathrooms will be regularly cleaned in-line with our enhanced on site hygiene and safety measures.

What should I do if I feel unwell while at the Opera House? 

If you fall ill while on site, please alert the nearest staff member and exit the venue. Depending on the nature of your illness, an Opera House nurse may attend to assist you.

Do I need to be vaccinated to visit the Sydney Opera House?

The Sydney Opera House no longer requires patrons to show that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

What is the best way to get to the Opera House? 

The Wilson car park is open and operating and we encourage patrons and visitors to consider prepay parking options. Please see their website for details. 

Will there be bag checks by Opera House security?

In line with our venue security procedures, Opera House security will be scanning and checking bags under the Monumental Stairs or within the Western Foyers, prior to entering the building. Bags will be scanned by an x-ray machine, and staff will wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling your belongings, such as gloves. Please travel lightly and do not bring items that require cloaking e.g. handbags bigger than A4-size, backpacks and umbrellas, which are not permitted inside our venues. 

Can I collect my tickets from the Box Office before a show?

It strongly encouraged that you print your tickets at home, or have them accessible on your mobile device. We will be using contactless scanning to check tickets at the entrance to the venue. The box office will be open for customer support, however minimising contact where possible is requested.

What about public transport?

COVID-related staff shortages have impacted most public transport services.

Where practical, and in line with government advice, we encourage patrons to plan ahead, and to consider all travel options, including travelling off peak, walking, cycling and driving if possible to minimise crowding on public transport.  When using public transport, please follow the travel advice from Transport NSW and wear a mask including when travelling via taxi and rideshare services.

Will cloaking be available? 

Yes, cloaking will remain available but it is strongly encouraged that you travel lightly and leave large, bulky items at home. Cloakroom attendants will use disposable paper tickets and wear gloves to handle items. Hand sanitiser will be available for patrons to use at all cloaking points. 

Can I bring cash?

Cashless payment methods are strongly encouraged. Please bring a credit or debit card for any onsite purchases. 

Can I smoke at the Opera House?

  • The health, safety and wellbeing of everyone at the Sydney Opera House is our top priority. In line with this commitment, the Opera House will become a smoke-free site from Saturday 1 January 2022.
  • By becoming a smoke-free site, the Opera House seeks to reduce exposure to harmful second-hand smoke, as well as minimise the impact of smoking on the environment, including litter and pollution of the surrounding marine environment. 

Frequently asked questions — food & beverage

Can I purchase food and drinks onsite?

Foyers will be open 90 minutes pre-show for Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and two hours pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances. Refreshments will be available for purchase from our theatre bars.

The venue doors will be open 45 minutes pre-show for Joan Sutherland Theatre performances, and 30 minutes pre-show for Western Foyer venue performances.

Please bring a credit or debit card for any on site purchases to enable contactless payment. You’re welcome to bring your own water bottle but no other food and drinks are permitted inside our venues unless otherwise specified. Opera Bar, House Canteen and Portside are also available for you to enjoy.
