Echoes of Piazzolla From the Rivers of South America

18 July 2025

In the Utzon Room

Classical Music

From the ports of Buenos Aires to the harbour of Sydney, join Canberra Tango Quintet and Duo Caivano Sawyer for a spectacular evening celebrating the music of Piazzolla and folklore.

Useful information:

Piazzolla, tango and folkore from South America

In this special commemoration of the July Independence of Argentina, Duo Caivano Sawyer will transport audiences to the northern and western regions of Argentina, interpreting traditional folkloric music in an authentic duo arrangement.

Join Argentinian bandoneón player Rodolfo Caivano and guitarist Kieran Sawyer as they present a collection of pieces from their recently released EP Encuentros, recorded in Argentina in 2024 during the International Tango Festival 2024.

Canberra Tango Quintet will present a program of Astor Piazzolla, reproducing his arrangements for the quintet formation. Sultry and sensual one moment, gritty and grotesque the next; the emotional terrain of Piazzolla’s music is like no other.

Experience this evening of tango in Piazzolla’s original quinteto arrangement, with bandoneón player Rodolfo Caivano, guitarist Matthew Lustri, violinist Eloise Reddy, pianist John Yoon, and double bassist Elizabeth Charlton.

The music of today is no longer glitzy and glamourous. It has a fury and rawness — an honest reflection of humanity and the times we’re in.
