Puppetry design and construction

To celebrate the creative learning season of Erth’s Dinosaurs, students can take a peek behind the curtain to learn skills and expert tips on how to make their own kinetic puppet.

In this 90-minute hands-on workshop with the Head of Design and puppet-makers from Erth’s design studio, students will learn how to adapt recycled materials, found objects and items from around the house to assemble and create their own puppets with moving parts.

This workshop can be booked alongside a performance of Erth's Dinosaurs

What to Expect

Students will:

  • Investigate the inner workings of Erth’s dinosaur puppets to discover how they are created and manipulated.
  • Learn the fundamental principles of dynamic movement and how they apply to moving body parts.
  • Apply these skills to bring inanimate objects to life.
  • Work collaboratively with Erth’s artists and fellow students to design and operate simple Bunraku-style puppets.
  • Be inspired to deepen their knowledge of palaeontology and puppetry in order to create their own menagerie of dinosaur puppets.

About Erth Visual & Physical Inc.

Erth is a company fuelled by beautiful accidents; a team of creators, makers and performers pushing the limits of design, content and experience.

For over thirty-five years Erth’s puppetry-based theatrical productions and innovative community projects have challenged and inspired audiences around the world, driven by a special interest in natural history, First Nations stories, sociology and urban mythology.

Today the company is recognised internationally as an innovator of physical and visual theatre, and a creator of brave, unbridled work for children.

In addition to touring the world with their long-running shows Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo and Erth’s Prehistoric Aquarium, the company’s ongoing push to explore boundaries and devise new work has seen the commissioning of The Liminal Hour and Winter Camp at Barangaroo for Vivid Sydney 2018 and 2019.  Erth have also explored the realm of virtual reality, and the development of ARC – an expansive, collaborative, multi-year, cross-platform work which explores preciousness and conservation.
