Exquisitely serene colours and pure, effervescent joy make an irresistible combination when Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and conductor Elizabeth Scott perform Poulenc’s Gloria and the original, orchestral version of Duruflé’s Requiem.

Maurice Duruflé and Francis Poulenc were almost exact contemporaries, and their musical creations share clean lines, elegance and directness, and an inventive way of looking to the past and giving fresh life to old traditions. You could almost think of them as the musical equivalents of ‘mid-century moderns’.

In this concert, Sydney Philharmonia’s 400-voice Festival Choir and conductor Elizabeth Scott perform the original, orchestral version of Duruflé’s Requiem. This transcendent music, underpinned by the fluid lines of Gregorian chant, is matched with Poulenc’s joyous Gloria, and an epic new choral work specially commissioned from Carl Vine.
